What is an Opposite Action Worksheet?

When making decisions in life, the old saying 'look before you leap' rings especially true. Taking a moment to pause and think before we act often saves us from a lot of trouble down the line. It allows us to consider our options, research potential risks or consequences and ensure that our chosen course of action is the best possible.

‍

Mental health professionals use an Opposite Action Worksheet to help clients make informed, logical, and healthy decisions. This worksheet is based on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) developed by Dr Marsha Linehan to help people manage their emotions and behaviors. It encourages people to look at their situation objectively, evaluate their options and make a choice that is beneficial in the long run.

‍

The worksheet asks individuals to think about their emotional response, identify what action or behavior it is prompting them to do and determine if that action aligns with their goals and values. If it doesn’t, then the worksheet encourages them to find an opposite action that would align better with their goals. For example, if you are in a situation where normally you let anger bubble over, and you may say hurtful things to the other person, opposite actions allow you to reevaluate the situation and find an alternative. In this instance, you may choose to walk away, or respond with a positive comment.

The 4 Steps of Opposite Action

To work through opposite action effectively, it is important that you identify the 4 steps that contribute to its efficacy. These include the following:

‍

Identify the emotion - It is important that you take a step back and recognize whether you are feeling angry, sad, overwhelmed, etc. By identifying the emotion, you can generate the appropriate response.

Recognize your action urge - Action urge refers to the motion or behavior that you want to commit in a specific situation. For example, if you are feeling angry, your action urge maybe insulting the other person.

Assess fit - Once you have identified the action urge, it is important to identify whether it fits the reality of the situation. Evaluate whether there is a better action you could undertake to improve the situation. Make sure that you are reacting out of facts, and not just your emotion.

Do the opposite - If your action urges don't fit the situation, then it is important to do the opposite of what the urge wants you to. Do the opposite action until you notice your emotions mellowing out. This can take some time, as well as effort and energy. However, over time, you can react more positively to situations, and have greater control over your emotions.
